Light a candle.
This is a going-to-bed ritual of mine that really makes a difference. To me, it marks the end of the "busyness" of the day, and makes the transition to rest and sleep.
Get yourself some flowers.
Flowers make me smile, thanks to their cheerful and soft colors. It pays to have some around. The wonderful association of shapes, colors, textures and smells of flowers is yet another reminder of the perfect variety of Nature.
Hug a tree.
That's a classic, but if you really mean it and hug a big old tree like it's your very best friend on earth, you'll see, you'll feel real good. And by the way, trees ARE our very best friends: they make it possible for us to breathe, right?...
Read.
This is an eternal number 1. Books very seldom disappoint me. And they have such power. Reading takes you places, teaches you new things about the world and about yourself, makes you forget everyday life, lifts your spirits. Grab a book!
Watch the sunrise/sunset.
It's hard to do both every day, but if you can manage to do either one, you'll have a very peaceful moment. It helps me feel more grounded, and get rid of the negative thoughts that can sometimes clog my brain at the end of a busy day.
Paint your toenails.
This very basic one definitely works. Between a foot with blank toenails and a foot with red toenails (or green or yellow or...), which is the one that makes you smile inside? So there...
Try a new recipe every week.
No excuses, you don't even have to buy a book, you're on the Internet, right? Just think of the surprises that await you when you experiment with new spices or new combinations... Hum...
Avoid wearing too much black.
Sounds dumb? Well, my experience has tought me that I feel better if I wear lighter colors. As a very depressed adolescent and young adult, believe me, I had a closetful of black stuff. Colors do affect the brain, that's a scientific fact.
Go to the zoo.
And yes, check out the monkeys! They have such a power to make you forget your worries. A zoo is a great safe place. And incidentally, you'll learn so much, too. It's always good to remember that humans are not the only ones on this planet.
Save a life.
Well I guess that would make two souls feel good. So go for it. Visit your local shelter(s), and bring back love home. A reminder though: pets are not stuffed animals that you can dump when you get sick of picking up their poop. But you knew that... Oh, and another thing: don't fall for the first sad eyes that you meet and make sure the pet you choose is the right one for you. Do some homework and learn about breeds. And spay/neuter.
Take a candle-lit bubble bath.
Another classic that does work... Warm water and aromatic candles do such wonders to relax. After that, you just have to use some nice lotion to make your skin soft and slip into fresh sheets. Hum...
